Barcelona five piece Crystal Fighters is a name that will be familiar to regular readers, after I featured them in my artists to watch in 2011. Their Spanish-style indie/electro fusion pop is quirky and interesting, and their debut album, Star of Love is one of the best album’s of the year. Their work also cries out for remixing and numerous people have obliged and met that call. Some of my favourites can be found below.
Crystal Fighters – Xtatic Truth (Last Japan Remix)
It seems fitting to start with the song that started my interest in the band. This is a party-centred remix – hard synths, fast beat, repeated lyrics. It was used in a club scene on British drama Skins. If this isn’t your thing, read on anyway as most of the guys music is far more mellow than this.
Crystal Fighters – Plage
This is the first original I heard, and as you can see it’s in stark contrast to the above remix. However, it plays to different strengths – it has the same slightly accented singing but couples it with twinkly guitars instead of a thumping bassline.
Crystal Fighters – Champion Sound
Aside from Plage, this is the album’s stand-out track. It follows the same routine… Back to Argentina!
Crystal Fighters – Follow
This is the next single. It lies somewhere between the originals and the remixes but is definitely more danceable than the others.
Crystal Fighters – Swallow (Angger Dimas Remix)
I hadn’t heard of the remixer before this track but after this indie/nu-disco edit I’m eager to hear more in the future.
Crystal Fighters – In The Summer (Picture House’s Summer In The Belearics)
The name pretty much sums up this track – the summery, chilled vibe to Crystal Fighters music is accentuated further. Around 3 minutes in is a particular highlight.
